With this basic recipe you can create festive shortbread cookies to please your guests, or just yourself!

Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- cup confectioners' sugar
- 1 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
Directions
- Step 1Make dough: Beat butter, sugar, vanilla, and salt with a mixer on medium speed until blended. On low speed, beat in flour until a soft dough forms. Divide dough into thirds, then flatten each into a disk. Wrap each separately in plastic; chill 30 minutes.
- Step 2Bake dough: Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Chill shortbread shapes on prepared baking sheets 15 minutes; bake 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on baking sheets set on a wire rack 1 minute, then transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
