As easy in the morning as the instant variety, this homecooked and hearty oatmeal will give you the energy you need to power through your day.

Ingredients
vegetable shortening
- 1 cup
whole milk
- 1 Tbsp.
brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp.
vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp.
salt
- 1 cup
porridge oats
- 2
apples
- 2 Tbsp.
unsalted butter
almonds
chocolate chips
maple syrup
cranberries
Directions
- Step 1Generously grease a 5-6- quart slow cooker with the shortening.
- Step 2Add the milk, sugar, vanilla, salt, and 1l water. Gently stir in the oats, apples, and butter. Cook, covered, on low until the apples are broken down and the oats are tender, 8 hours (some oats will stick to the slow cooker).
- Step 3Gently stir the oats, then spoon into bowls. Add additional milk, if desired, and sprinkle with your favourite toppings.
