When it comes to homemade desserts, it doesn't get much easier than Oreo truffles. You only need four ingredients (okay, five, if you're going to decorate the tops), and they taste like chocolate cheesecake wrapped in even more chocolate, only you don't have to worry about water baths or preheating the oven.
Seriously, this, a little cream cheese, and canola oil are all you need:
What's even more amazing about them, though, is how versatile these treats are: Just about any flavor cookie can be truffle-ized, which is perfect for Oreo's seemingly endless array of flavors.
We made three takes on this glorious dessert: regular, mint, and peanut butter. To create any flavor, you'll need:
- 1 package Oreos (for mint, choose mint Oreos; for peanut butter, choose peanut butter)
- 1 bag of semisweet chocolate chips (12 ounces)
- 1 package of cream cheese, softened
- 1-2 teaspoons canola oil
First, stick a sleeve of Oreos in a gallon-size resealable bag and use the back of a spoon to smash them up as small as possible so your truffles aren't lumpy. You could also use a food processor, but then how else would you get your aggression out? P90X? Pssh.
Hulk out on the remaining two sleeves, until every Oreo has been smashed to bits.
Mix in the cream cheese*, then roll them all into quarter-sized balls. Resist the urge to lick your Oreo-covered fingers. Fail at that, but summon enough resolve to stick the dough balls in the refrigerator to harden for at least 20 minutes. Once your time is almost up, pour the chocolate chips into a bowl, along with the canola oil, and microwave in 25-second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is fully melted. If the chocolate seems really thick and gloopy, stir in a little more oil. It should be about as thick as cake batter.
*Note for the Peanut Butter Batch: For even more peanutty flavor, you could also replace half of the cream cheese with 1/2 cup of peanut butter.
Cover up that naked truffle in a cloak of chocolate, and stick it on a parchment-lined baking sheet. If you want to get fancy, decorate the top with a little melted white chocolate (like we did, for the OG Oreo flavor), crumbled Ande's mints, or a mix of melted white chocolate and peanut butter (use about two parts peanut butter to one part white chocolate chips).
From there, send it back to the fridge for another 20-minute timeout. Leave 'em overnight if you want—you just want the chocolate to harden.
You can share them with friends or devour them in a dark corner of the room by yourself. Not that we've ever done that. Ahem.
