Take an instant vacation with a sip of this Bahama Mama. This beautiful cocktail combines two different types of rum, three types of juices, a splash of grenadine, and some fun garnishes to make an irresistible drink. My recipe might veer a little bit away from the traditional, but I promise you: this rum cocktail is as sweet and refreshing as ever. Whether you need to cure the winter blues or are looking for a classic summer cocktail that never disappoints, you'll be setting sail after one sip of this tropical drink.
• Fruit Juice: The inclusion of OJ is up for debate in a classic Bahama Mama, but in my book, it’s 100% worth it. What isn’t up for debate is the inclusion of pineapple juice. It’s absolutely key for that tropical flavor. Don’t feel like you have to get fancy with the juices, simply use the brands you enjoy drinking.
• Rum: We’re using two types of rum here: dark rum and coconut rum. This makes our drink not only extra boozy, but the coconut rum really hits home that tropical flavor. Use your favorite brands, or check out our list of the best rum brands for inspo.
• Lime Juice: Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best possible flavor, but if you want to use bottled, make sure you’re choosing a good brand.
• Grenadine: A splash of grenadine is all you need to not only add in that sweet cherry flavor, but to create that sunrise effect. Have some leftover? It’s time for Shirley Temple floats!
First things first: Fill your glass with ice so that your drink stays extra cold and refreshing (hopefully you’re sippin’ on these in the summer sun). Then, pour in all of your drink ingredients, starting with the juices and following with the rum and lime juice. Once everything is added, throw in your splash of grenadine. Give it a taste, and add more as needed.
Once your drink is ready to go, it's time to move onto the fun part: the garnishes. In my book, no Bahama Mama is complete without maraschino cherries, a pineapple wedge, and little tropical umbrellas. This really completes the tropical vibe, but feel free to garnish how you please!

Depending on who you ask, a classic Bahama Mama could take on countless variations. Many recipes include a coffee liqueur, like Kahlúa. Others swap out the lime juice for freshly squeezed lemon juice, or focus more on the pineapple juice instead of the OJ. Although this recipe is my favorite combination of flavors, I encourage you to experiment to find your favorite balance of flavors!
