Sure, you can go crazy with the toppings, but the easiest way to upgrade your burger starts with a homemade spice mix. My homemade burger seasoning only requires 5 ingredients (+ salt and pepper) that you most likely already have on hand, making it all too easy to make (and experiment with!). Smoky and subtly sweet, this spice mix adds bold flavor to any burger recipe without the effort. Read on for all of my top tips on how to upgrade your burger game at every summer BBQ.
• Smoked Paprika: Paprika adds that bold, smoky flavor to this seasoning. If you want to replace it, use a bold, strong spice like chili or cumin powder.
• Garlic Powder: A little bit of garlic powder adds heaps of flavor to this mix. I highly recommend keeping it, but you can also use onion powder.
• Brown Sugar: This adds a wonderful sweetness to our seasoning mix, but if you don’t want any sweetness, then skip it or decrease the amount.
• Dried Oregano: This is my favorite dried herb to add, but you can use dried thyme, rosemary, or sage instead.
• Kosher Salt: You may have noticed that all of our recipes call for kosher salt. If you’re using iodized or sea salt, keep in mind that you might need to use less.
• Black Pepper: Add as much black pepper as you please here. Add a bit, then adjust to taste.
• Cayenne Pepper: Cayenne pepper adds a kick of spice here; feel free to adjust to taste if you’re not a spice fan.
Like most seasoning mixes, this one couldn't be easier to create. Simply mix all of your ingredients in a bowl until very well combined.
Once combined, you can either store in an airtight container, or get out your patties if you're using now. Once your patties are formed, season them liberally with the spice mix on both sides. Use as much or as little as you want depending on the amount of flavor you want to pack into your burger. Make sure you gently press the seasoning into the meat, so that it fully sinks into the patty.
The full list of ingredients and instructions can be found in the recipe below.
There are no rules limiting you to use this mix exclusively for beef burgers! The flavors are extremely versatile and taste amazing on chicken, turkey, pork, and even seafood. They also pair well with roasted veggies.
Once made, store this seasoning in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, where it should keep for around 6 months.
