While Cadbury eggs might feel like a thing of the past, they’ve found new life by transforming themselves into cocktails. Why? Because candy is great and the big kids in us need an excuse to eat it. The milk chocolate has that perfect crack as you sink your teeth into liquid sugar. It’s got that nostalgic lip-smacking quality. Here are some tips on how to make this festive cocktail.
The essentials:
While milk chocolate only encompasses the outside of the egg, it’s important to re-create that chocolate flavor in the cocktail. Although crème de cacao is a clear liqueur, it imparts a light chocolate flavor and leaves a white canvas for the drink. I chose half milk and half cream so the milk was neither too heavy nor light. Choose vodka or gin depending on how you like your martinis.
The egg yolk:
It took a few tries to figure out the best way to create that vibrant orange yolk. I tried caramel at the bottom but wanted to go with something that floats. A little whipped cream with yellow food dye makes for the best-floating yolk.
Storage:
Feel free to go ahead and make a big batch of this cocktail. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.

Ingredients
- 1/4 cup
milk chocolate
- 3 Tbsp.
condensed milk
Yellow and red food dye
- 3/4 cup
half-and-half
- 2 1/2 oz.
crème de cacao
- 1 1/2 oz.
vodka or gin
Ice
- 3/4 cup
seltzer
- 1
Cadbury egg, halved lengthwise
Directions
- Step 1On a small, shallow, heatproof plate, microwave chocolate in 10-second increments, stirring between each, until melted and smooth, about 30 minutes total. Dip rims of martini or coupe glasses into chocolate.
- Step 2In a small bowl, combine condensed milk with a drop of yellow food dye and a very tiny amount of red dye. The color should be a similar orange color to the inside of the Cadbury egg. Pour mixture into bottom of prepared glasses to resemble an egg yolk.
- Step 3In a cocktail shaker, combine half-and-half, crème de cacao, and vodka. Fill shaker with ice. Vigorously shake until outside of shaker is very frosty, about 20 seconds. Strain cocktail into prepared glasses. Top off with seltzer.
- Step 4Gently slice a small slit in the back of each egg half and arrange on rim of glasses, using some melted chocolate or a skewer to help adhere, if needed.
