Deviled eggs are a classic and for the most part a pretty standard recipe across the board. They make an appearance at almost every party, potluck, and Easter brunch. So we were curious. Does Ree Drummond, the queen of the midwest, make a better deviled egg than Kourtney Kardashian? Both have their own personal spin on the appetizer and add things like avocados and pickles. We put them both under the tough scrutiny of the Delish Team to find out which one was better.
KOURTNEY'S RECIPE
Leave it to Kourtney to try and healthify deviled eggs. She adds avocado to her mixture in what we assume to be an attempt to add a healthier fat to her eggs instead of the traditional mayonnaise. The problem is that she does still in fact add mayo and it's even more than Ree adds to hers. Kourtney also calls specifically for vegan mayonnaise, which gave us all a good laugh since it's going into deviled eggs and by definition can never be vegan. Her eggs were nicely flavored, but possibly a bit too smooth for some of our tasters. They also couldn't get over their color!
REE'S RECIPE
Ree fully embraces the deviled egg and adds everything you would expect: mayo, mustard, paprika, and some hot sauce for garnish. She also interestingly adds some chopped pickles and juice to give a surprising crunch. We are pretty pro pickle around here, but even this shook us a little. Deviled eggs are meant to be smooth not studded with bits of pickles. This both disturbed some of our taste testers and surprised them with how much they liked it.
THE VERDICT
And the winner is Ree Drummond! A pretty unsurprising outcome, honestly. We expected both color and texture to throw our taste testers off with Kourtney's and it did just that. When it comes to deviled eggs people want the classic. They expect yellow filling s with a sprinkling of paprika. Adding avocado was good in theory and might have been better with less mayo or something to offset how overly rich it became. Lesson learned.
