There are many reasons to love tilapia: it’s inexpensive, sturdy, and with a light taste that pairs well with assertive flavors. We especially love it grilled—it adds another layer of flavor to the fish, and opens up the possibilities to various toppings and flavor pairings. In this recipe, we paired our grilled fish with a simple charred tomato salsa to really elevate the entire meal. If you’re looking for a summer date-night winner, read on for everything you need to know to make this grilled recipe:
Top tips for making grilled tilapia:
— The seasonings. Because we’re pairing our tilapia with a flavor-packed tomato and onion topping, we kept it simple when it came to the seasonings—only salt and pepper needed here. But, if you’re looking to go with another flavor profile, feel free to get creative! Lemon-pepper seasoning, paprika, garlic powder, or Cajun seasoning would all be delicious.
— Not grilling weather? No problem! This recipe can also be done in a grill pan. Or, if you're looking for something more hands off, give this lemony oven-baked tilapia a try.
Serving ideas.
When tomatoes are in season, we highly recommend serving this fish with the charred tomato salsa, but your topping options don’t stop there. This fish would be equally delicious with grilled pineapple salsa, simple grilled tomatoes, or with avocado salsa if you’re looking for something extra fresh.
Looking for sides? This grilled tilapia would pair perfectly with many of our summer sides, including our Greek orzo salad, Thai watermelon salad, or zucchini casserole with garlicky breadcrumbs. Since you have the grill out, why not cook up your sides at the same time? Our grilled baked potatoes, tomato gnocchi kebabs, or balsamic glazed mushrooms would all be delicious (and easy!) pairings.

Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp.
extra-virgin olive oil, divided
- 2 Tbsp.
red wine vinegar
- 1/4
small red onion, thinly sliced
- 2 Tbsp.
fresh oregano leaves
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
- 3
(8-oz.) tilapia filets
- 1/2 cup
grape tomatoes
Directions
- Step 1Preheat grill to medium-high heat. In a medium bowl, whisk 2 tablespoons olive oil with red wine vinegar. Add red onion and oregano and season with salt and pepper.
- Step 2Brush tilapia with remaining olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place filets and grape tomatoes on preheated grill. Cook grape tomatoes until soft and blistered, about 4 minutes total. Grill tilapia until edges are opaque and the flesh releases easily from the grill, about 4 minutes per side.
- Step 3Remove fish onto serving plate. Toss grilled tomatoes with vinegar mixture and spoon over filets. Serve immediately.
