Mint lovers—this is the pie for you. Whether you’re looking for a festive-ly green addition to your St. Patrick’s Day spread or the dessert version of your favorite classic cocktail, this frozen grasshopper pie will be a hit wherever it’s served. With a creamy, minty filling and a no-bake chocolate crust, this frozen mint and chocolate pie will be a refreshing addition to your spread that mint chocolate chip lovers will thank you for. 😉
Why is it called a grasshopper pie?
This bright green pie gets its name from the classic grasshopper cocktail, a minty drink with a bright green hue that originated in New Orleans. Both the pie and the cocktail get their refreshing minty flavor (and iconic color) from the addition of crème de menthe. If you can’t get enough of the mint and chocolate combo in the classic grasshopper cocktail, this frozen pie just might be your new favorite dessert.
Origins of grasshopper pie.
Just like the name, this pie most likely was created as a dessert-version of the grasshopper cocktail, which has been around for over 100 years. While the cocktail (made of crème de menthe, white chocolate liqueur, and vodka) was created in the early 1900s, the chiffon pie most likely was created in the mid-1900s. With an Oreo crust and a minty, creamy middle, this pie has all the flavors you know and love from the classic cocktail, but in shareable dessert form!
Can I make this ahead?
This no-bake pie is a perfect make ahead St. Patrick’s Day dessert or refreshing summer potluck contribution. Simply make your pie, then place in the freezer until firm (around 3 hours). If you’d rather keep it in the freezer for a few days beforehand, no problem! Simply cover it tightly with aluminum foil to protect it.
