• In a new interview, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner talked about feeling pressured to lose weight when she was younger.
  • This isn’t the first time she’s talked about her mental health publicly. Last month, she disclosed that she started suffering from depression at the age of 17.

Sophie Turner hasn’t been shy about her mental health struggles and the pressure to look a certain way, and in a new interview with Marie Claire Australia, she talked about what it was like to experience those pressures at such a young age.

“I have experienced mental illness firsthand and I’ve seen what it can do to the people around [the sufferers] as well,” she said. During her teenage years, growing up in front of millions of people started to have its downsides. “My metabolism suddenly decided to fall to the depths of the ocean and I started to get spotty and gain weight, and all of this was happening to me on camera.”

How’d she deal with that? “Therapy,” Sophie said. “Everyone needs a therapist, especially when people are constantly telling you you’re not good enough and you don’t look good enough. I think it’s necessary to have someone to talk to and to help you through that.”

She talked about this same issue on a podcast two weeks ago, saying that social media was a huge part of what contributed to this. “People used to say, ‘Damn, Sansa gained 10 lbs’ or ‘Damn, Sansa needs to lose 10 lbs’ or ‘Sansa got fat.’ It was just a lot of weight comments, or I would have spotty skin because I was a teenager and that’s normal, and I used to get a lot of comments about my skin and my weight and how I wasn’t a good actress,” she said.

Thankfully, she’s in a better place now, and part of that is because of her relationship with Joe Jonas, who she married in a Las Vegas ceremony two days ago.

“When someone tells you they love you every day, it makes you really think about why that is, and I think that makes you love yourself a bit more,” she said. “So yeah, I love myself.”
