Don't be afraid of muddling mint, it's easy!

Classic Cuban Mojitos are one of our favorite cocktails, and for good reason. They’re relatively easy to make for how impressive they turn out, they’re extremely refreshing, and best of all, they’re ripe for improvisation. Check out our 13 mojito recipes for ideas on how to expand upon the classic—we bet you’ll be inspired to muddle mint in no time.

At its most basic, a Mojito is a simple cocktail of rum, mint, simple syrup, and lime. While it’s refreshingly simple, there are a few important things to note: For a mojito, you must use white rum with sweeter, tropical vibes, rather than a dark or spiced version. Secondly: There’s really no getting around it, you must muddle your mint. But don’t worry if you don’t have a fancy bar tool to do it—you can use a wooden spoon, flat rolling pin, or even a meat tenderizer. The goal is to muddle the mint just enough so that the leaves emit their natural oils, but not too much that they bruise or break into pieces.

Other than that, as long as the drink's primary ingredients are there, you're free to experiment as much as you like! We certainly have, like in our mojitos, 3 ways (pineapple, strawberry, and blueberry) or our blackberry mojito (including a virgin version!). We’ve even gotten creative and turned a mojito into a popsicle, like our strawberry mojito pops or our mojito watermelon pops (made with whole watermelon slices, no popsicle molds needed).

The key to a good mojito is in the muddling, but if you don’t have a muddler, that’s okay! You can use a wooden spoon or any other kitchen tool that could be used to mash and grind in a glass. For a mojito, you want to muddle mint just enough so that the leaves emit their natural oils, but not too much that they bruise or break into pieces. Mix the mint with lime, rum, and simple syrup, top with soda, and you’ll swear you’re on the beach.
