Even though ABC's Modern Family isn't a show about food, it's chock full of "Why didn't I think of that?!" cooking moments. Like, for example, the time Sofia Vergara's character taught us all that a pinch of salt in chocolate milk can bring out its cocoa flavor, resulting in a richer drink. Or the time Phil Dunphy (played by actor Ty Burrell) invented self-flipping pancakes by putting popcorn kernals in the batter.
Okay, so that last one may not work in real life, but the show has provided enough cooking inspiration to warrant its own cookbook—out Sept. 22—and one of the most ingenious recipes in the book hasn't ever gotten airtime: Personal pizzas made with ramen noodles instead of dough.
The recipe, known as Haley's Ramen Pizza Hack, is the ultimate college dorm food, drunk food, or hey-it's-dinnertime-and-my-fridge-is-empty meal. You just pop a package of instant ramen out of its plastic baggie, throw out the flavor packet (or save it to sprinkle on popcorn later, like a zero-food-wasting boss), and cover the top of that pressed-pasta-square with tomato sauce, shredded cheese and pepperoni—or whatever other toppings you'd like.
It goes into a 450 degrees F-oven for 8 minutes, or until the cheese has melted, and becomes a crispy-crust pizza that's a thousand times better than those soggy-bottomed, microwave pizza dinners.
Once you try it, you may be so obsessed that you start plotting out your own ramen pizza empire.
