1. It comes from modest roots.

When chocolate prices skyrocketed during World War II, Italian pastry chef Pietro Ferrero stretched the rationed ingredient by adding ground hazelnuts.

2. It never judges you.

Seriously though, how many times have you been starving and relied on a sliced apple slathered with Nutella for dinner? Answer = more than you can count.

3. It's there when you need it most.

While studying abroad in Florence, where my Nutella obsession hit an all-time high—when in Rome! Err, 175 miles from it—I'd hit the bars with friends and then come home a little tipsy and head straight for a jar. It was my drunk food of choice for months.

4. It's super low-maintenance.

Nutella is perhaps most delish when enjoyed in its purest state, straight from the jar with a spoon. Oh, and it doesn't even require a refrigerator after you open it.

5. It brings out the best in everything.

I have yet to meet a dessert made with Nutella that I don't like. Brownies + Nutella = fugdy bliss. Crepes + Nutella = game over. Ice cream + Nutella = YASSS.

7. It'll feed your wildest fantasies.

Want to throw a Nutella party for 50? Or win the award for best gift-giver at a white elephant party? Or slather it all over your body? (Just kidding...) Well, you can because Nutella comes in 6.6-pound tubs (complete with an adorable handle).

8. It acknowledges your shortcomings—and even thrives on them.

If you're someone who still burns her toast (raise your hand!), don't despair: Nutella turns those charred bits into a totally edible breakfast or dessert (or dinner, let's be real).

But we don't all love the hazelnut spread as much as I do; in fact, my coworker Alyssa loathes Nutella.
