Grapenuts Ice Cream

For the G installment in our summer series, Icy Treats A to Z, we feature a flavor that's exotic, but made of ordinary ingredients for a treat that's oh-so-good: Grape Nut Ice Cream.

Yes, you understood correctly: This ice cream does indeed contain the Post breakfast cereal, Grape Nuts. We hadn't heard of it either until we happened across the flavor in a little Brooklyn coffee shop. However, Grape Nut ice cream is a popular scoop both in Jamaica and New England, so maybe it's already a favorite.

If you've ever scraped the roof of your mouth on a spoonful of Grape Nuts, you'll know that it takes a long soaking in milk to make them soft. But that's what makes them so great as an ice cream mix-in. The toasty pebblelike nuggets soften, but remain substantial in the sweet vanilla cream base, providing both a textural and flavor contrast that's pretty addicting.

Head over to Chantay Campbell's blog Greedy Girl Cooks for the Vanilla-Bean Grape-Nut Ice Cream recipe, which, bonus: doesn't contain eggs.
