In most cases, baked goods are best when they're homemade. Brownies are the exception. It's really hard to achieve fudgy perfection from scratch. Boxed mix not only makes it easy, but can yield results that actually taste like someone spent a lot of time on them. But it all depends on what type of mix you use.
For this taste test, we wanted to avoid gourmet mixes that use fancy cocoa and used only brands that are readily available at your supermarket. Here's our ranking of four of the most popular boxes on the market.
#3 Betty Crocker
If you're someone who likes a more cakey brownie, this one's for you. The cocoa flavor isn't overpowering.
#2 Ghiradelli
A few people in the kitchen thought these would definitely win, and almost a third of the taste testers did prefer them. The chocolate flavor is bold and the crumb is chewy but moist (sorry!).
*** It should be noted that this mix includes chocolate chips but we refrained from using them because none of the other mixes had them. Had there been chocolate chips in the brownies, these could've won.
#1 Duncan Hines
These brownies slay. They're rich and decadent, and they actually taste homemade. Fudgy as heck, but not so much that they're a gooey mess when you try to eat them, you can serve these brownies with pride.
